Provide a Nurturing Environment as a Montessori Teacher

Montessori teachers view children and classroom education differently than the common teacher-student relationship. Their focus shifted from academic education to encouraging each child’s individuality by providing nurturing environment to teach social interactions and emotional skills. In order to achieve this goal Montessori methods are often applied in class and thus bringing about overall development at early age of a child.

The Montessori Method was developed by Maria Montessori in the early 20th century, the educator and physician had altogether different outlook towards child growth and development.  The method focuses on each child’s internal guidance for self-directed development. Herein the teacher is like a monitor or guide keeping a watch at the classroom for smooth flow of learning and avoiding obstacles, without directly instructing or involving in the free ambience of the classroom. The lessons given by the teacher only revolves round helping the child with use or play with various instructional toys in the classroom.
Instead of instructing with lectures, handouts, worksheets and lesson plans, a Montessori teacher will offer guidance while the children themselves responsible for their own learning in individual or group. The classroom will contain several stations, each having different toy sets allowing the child to explore and learn. One station can have bucket of Lego blocks and several pictures of simple objects like an apple or a house which the children will build if they want. Other stations might have books, xylophone, pencils and crayons which will involve them in engaging activities. The idea behind this is that children will learn through playing.
Another interesting Montessori classroom is age grouping. Montessori classrooms often have mixed-age class, for example children ages ranging from three to six. This is important because children at different stages learn in their different pace. And younger children learn by watching older children play. This is also known as scaffolding, a method of social learning.
A Montessori classroom is completely different form typical classroom in a number of ways. This difference has to be considered by the teacher while providing a nurturing environment to develop children independently in a well-rounded manner. BY allowing them to play on their own and instead of letting them listen to lectures, classroom allows children develop the motivation to learn and explore.
If you are planning to be a Montessori teacher then training is absolutely is necessary to keep yourself updates with the Montessori approaches to needed to be applied in a classroom. There are different levels of Montessori Teachers Training- Certificate, Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma which will help you develop and prepare yourself in a Montessori environment.  Instead of information passing from teacher to student, herein the teacher is now skilled to put the children in an environment and help them to learn by making intelligent choices and carry out research in a prepared environment. The teacher constantly protects the student’s concentration from interruption. This fosters a love of learning in the students. There is in fact a triangle between- student, parent or teacher and the environment. It’s the role of the adult to prepare and continue preparing the environment to link the child to it through introductions of various learning inputs like- books and materials, projects and lessons. All this nurtures the child’s exploration and creative zeal. Hence, children often learn to surpass the level of education of their peers and knowledge of the adults around them and they learn to find answers by themselves.
The Montessori school environment is arranged according to subject area like cooking, cleaning, gardening, art and craft and caring for animals, library corner etc wherein the children move around the classroom instead of sitting at the desks. There is no limit posed on the child to their pace of learning. They can take longer time in learning things new to them. The mixed age groups of children learn from each other, facilitated by careful observation, individual lessons and keeping record by the teacher. All this help the teacher in developing a bonding with the students. This nurturing environment provides the base for complete growth and development of the children.

How to Increase the ‘Eat Q’ of the Kids

Eating together in the class room with other friends is how kids learn to make healthy food choices, to communicate with others and to master table manners. But here you as a teacher need to play the most vital role of teaching them healthy food habits and instilling the sense of healthy eating and its importance among them. Also the kids are staying for a long time in school hence you need to take care of their proper nutrition as well. If you insist that young kids sit with the friends at a certain time even if they are not ready for it at that time or are refusing to eat, they will start to become skilled at the rules of dining together. Here is how you can make hay while the sun shines.

First you need to set up a healthy regular snack and meal schedule in school. Most kids do well with one meal and one snack while in school. When the kid’s body is used to a proper time schedule for meal and snack, hunger and appetite are more regular. This helps the young person feel more in adjust with his or her body.
You also need to have the child eat a healthy meal time. Suggest their parents to pack fruits, vegetables, yogurt, cereals, bread, meat, dry fruits etc. for their meal. Make sure that they do not eat junk foods, fast foods, chocolates, sweet or fried foods regularly. It may suits their taste buds but will result into weigh gain, cavities, stomach problem and other diseases.

But you should keep in mind that the food should be also tasty which they will be eager to eat. Find at least one food that the child likes, offering healthy and tasty snacks that the child will enjoy. Keep the meal time interesting, pleasant and positive. For example you can take a balanced approach by cheering healthier treats and smaller piece of those treats. Like get the kids in the habit of sharing one small bowl of French fries once in a while.
Another is to confirm a meal and snacks time and limit meals to a reasonable length of time. Eating lunch should not take longer than 30 minutes. If essential, you can even create an organized meal and snacks sitting arrangement.
After you promote a healthy meal time and food schedule, encourage the kids to drink a lot of water and limit sweet drinks. As a teacher it is also your duty to teach them the importance of drinking water and that they never go thirsty. Also offer lots of vegetables and fruits every day. For example, add some fruit to the kid’s snack, and include some carrot sticks in the kid's lunch.

Another effective way instilling interest and love for fruits and veggies among the kids is to have them grow some vegetables or fruits in school garden. Let the kids have their own plants to take care of. Or you can keep some cooking classes where the kids can make their own salads or fruit shake. This will add a new dimension to their eating schedule.
Finally keep in mind that you are the one whom they look up to so be a good role model. If kids see you are trying to eat right and getting physically active it will send a message that good health and right eating is absolutely essential.

Your Teaching should Increase Pupil Engagement

Engaging students is one of the major challenges teachers face on a daily basis. Motivation and engagement play a vital role in student’s interest and enjoyment in school. Because it has been observed those who are engaged in learning tend to perform higher academically and are better behaved than others. Student’s engagement and achievement are therefore correlated and all depend on the skill of the teacher in classroom management.
Student engagement can be described as a tendency to be behaviourally, emotionally and cognitively involved in academic activities. Teachers play a vital role in their engagement and motivation. Your confidence in teaching, enjoyment and effective orientations in the classroom leave a positive impact on the student’s engagement.

The following suggestions will guide you to improve and cultivate student motivation and thus engagement that comes with it:-
Maintaining your physical and mental stability: Undeniably teaching is a stressful job and it is absolutely necessary on the part of teachers to take care of their mental and physical wellbeing. They should engage themselves in relaxing activities because as much as you alleviate your stress it will reflect in the classroom and have positive impact on the mutual relationship between student and teacher. Teachers who feel good about themselves maintain patience and mingle and interact in a better way with the students. Stress busters for teachers could be: yoga, work-outs, jogging, healthy eating, biking, dancing and meditation.
Welcoming classroom environment for students of all cultures: To be engaged in a classroom, students must feel the environment where they are accepted and affirmed. The environment should be warm and inviting towards students giving a feeling of warmth and attachment.

Ensuring student’s self belief:  Researches have shown that student’s engagement to achieve goals important to them is possible when they have self-belief. They must believe in themselves that they can learn, deal with failures and gain experiences from those. Students hence must be involved in problem –solving activities and in discussions to solve those. This helps them to work on their commitment and confidence towards learning.
Observation of Student’s preferences:  Teachers can connect with students having adequate knowledge and understanding what students like and dislike. It could be favourite books, movies or games they like most. This collected information can be used for motivating and engaging in the academic activities by building a rapport with them.
Work autonomously & collaborate with peer groups: Student’s should be allowed to work autonomously and with others, and thus develop a sense of competence and thus resulting in greater student engagement and motivation.
Active learning group:  The key components to engagement are active learning groups, peer relationships and social skills.
Challenging and enriching educational experiences: Easy learning activities are not always effective in engaging students as those do not pose challenge to them. With difficult activities students start reflecting, questioning, evaluating, conjecturing and thus are engaged. Your responsibility is to create rich educational experiences that would pose challenge to the student’s ideas and make they walk a level ahead.
Recognizing the teacher’s role: Teacher must keep up their professional development through involvement in various educational activities such as reading journals, attending workshops and webinars etc. Thus you have to keep yourself updated with all the new techniques and strategies of teaching.

Early Childhood Education Develops Creativity in Learners

Early childhood education plays an important role in supporting children’s ability in art, dramatic expression and creative responses to different problems. Creativity enhances a young child’s desire to learn and supports intellectual development. In order to enhance creativity of children, few things are needed to be kept in mind:-
-    One important way a child learns about his/her true self is through this direct interaction with you
-    Always maintain positivity while responding to a child’s work and ideas
-    Focus should be given on the uniqueness of each child and encourage to nurture her trust and creativity
-    Organize group meetings where children can freely express themselves in different areas

Now let us explore different ways of jump-starting children’s creativity in different curriculum areas:-
Use of art: Finger painting, drawing, and clay work- are few activities that promote creativity and are adopted in many early childhood classrooms. Adequate observation and monitoring of these activities will reveal creative discoveries. During this time, the preschool teacher will appreciate the child’s discovery like layering more and more colour changes the density of the colour. Your sensitivity towards the child’s discovery will increase his confidence and passionate commitment required for creativity.

Dance and Movements: Some kids need to be involved in active movement a lot of time. It will be wise for the teacher to encourage them in dance and movements as much as possible like dividing the students in two groups. One group will make music by singing and associated with clapping their hands, tapping their feet on the floor, playing rhythm instruments. The other group will dance to the music in their own innovative ways, free style.
Herein children learn to represent things by use of their bodies. They can use this movement to express their various emotions - joy, anger and surprise etc. They can act like butterfly, bunny or an elephant.
These ways of creative thinking helps them to grow in their overall personality. It’s growth of both body and mind.
Imagination Games:  Imagination games help them to fancy things, retrieve information from their memory, compare and contrast ideas, and make connection to every bit of information. Like asking a child to pretend to act like an animal of their choice - now teacher observes which animal they choose and how they act upon behaving like that animal throughout the day. In the due process they learn about themselves, their capabilities and preferences and reactions.

Classroom get-togethers:  Create a form of summer picnic in the classroom. Start by spreading a large sheet on the floor; put some seashells across and small tubs full of sand or water. And engage each one in making sandwiches and various slices of fruit mix. All this unleashes their creativity in organising an event of fun and entertainment for a large group.
Read poetry: Reading poetry to them develops their language and their understanding of what coming next. This leads to brain development which is vital at this stage of growth.
Thus relationship between the preschool teachers and children, how classroom time and space are organised and available resource materials are important factors in the development of the creativity of the children. It is prime responsibility of the teacher to unearth resources to satisfy children’s creative thrust to know and develop in the due process. Classroom thus is the place where creativity is likely to blossom and grow. Early childhood care and education is the foundation phase for any kid’s development process. During this phase instead of pushing them across the edge with intensive studies, involving them in various creative activities are immensely useful.

Early Childhood Teachers Teach Young Learners the Basic Skills

Early childhood education is a broad term which describes such educational programs that serve children in their preschool years before they reach the age to enter kindergarten. This stage involves number of activities and experiences designed to aid in the overall development of preschoolers before they enter elementary school. Early childhood is the phase when a child goes through immense growth and development. During this phase the brain develops faster than any other point of time in their lives. The basic foundation for their social skills, self esteem, perception of the world and moral outlook are established during this phase guided by an early childhood trained teacher. They teach the basic skills to young learners which is undoubtedly important and supportive for learning.

Young learners are not like other students. Their needs are unique which the teacher must understand while interacting with them. A child gets absolutely attached to the teacher as a substitute of their parents or may avoid you completely. During this introductory time the teacher must be very tactful in handling the situation. Initially the teacher’s role is of a mediator when the children have problems sharing or learning how to get along. With time, the teacher has to be extremely prompt with the needs of the child as attachment grows.
During this phase of their life, a child learns a lot about themselves and the world around them where the parents are their first contact. As a teacher of young learners, you become somewhat a surrogate parent, their first source of guidance in playing and bonding with others in the classroom. The early childhood teacher teaches–how to share, how to take turns, how to have manners-lesson that will have prolonged impact in the crucial phase of their life.

5.    Helping them with listening and speaking skills
6.    Reading books to them
7.    Teaching them alphabets and letter
8.    Teaching them numbers and counting
9.    Teaching children spoken languages
There has been much debate over what should be covered by an ideal preschool curriculum. Actually early childhood is a period of tremendous growth and curiosity that is hard to decide what and when, a child needs to learn. Many preschool curricula establish the teacher as a guide allowing children to discover for themselves while the teacher led them throughout the process.
Early childhood care and education are thus the responsibility of the teacher. In short, they shape future of the children in terms of their learning at higher level. Early Childhood Education Activates the Child's Natural Desire to Learn

If early childhood education is essential for a kid’s growth then teacher training in India is an absolute necessity for the pre-primary teachers to work on their teaching skills, methodologies and vocabulary. While there have been controversies regarding starting of school at an early age of two to three years.  Experts suggest that early education activates and promotes a lifelong desire and love for learning.

They had provided with justifications in support of their argument.
  • Early development processes at this early age will prepare them for a classroom environment in school.
  • Various activities in the classroom like reading interesting books, singing songs, finger plays enhance their skills and interest towards learning.
  • Also participating and interacting and communicating with peer groups help to utilize both hemispheres of the brain towards proper growth of the child.
  • Simple mathematical tasks of counting or learning to climb stairs etc are helpful in developing the learning skills.
The decision to admit a kid depends on the distinct advantages of preschool programs-
  • The programs promote overall personality growth of a kid with the help of social, mental, physical well-being.
  • It increases a sense of independence, self confidence with the adults and other children outside their safe zone of household.
  • They get complete freedom to explore and experiment, discover and innovate while they participate in an engrossing activity.
  • They get the outlet to express themselves freely and constructively.
  • Preschool cultivates those skills that are needed to succeed in a higher level of study in school through linguistic skills or conceptual games.
  • They develop an understanding of the authority and develop self control and discipline in their attitudes which helps them a lot in facing the world outside.
  • The classroom is designed such that it can encourage responsibility towards oneself and his or her actions directed for others.
But there are certain misconceptions about early learning such as-
  • Children do not like to learn rather their innocence is hampered if forced to indulge them in various activities of concentration.
  • The kids cease being kids as their spontaneity is marred and are forced to adjust with the old school norms and regulations. This is too early for a kid to adopt and adjust to the real life conditions. Rather they are forced upon to involve with the process of learning.
It can be suggested that learning at young age has its own pros and cons. The children generally are fun loving in nature. When learning is in disguise of playing it could be fun and captivating rather than challenging or boring. Honestly, the first thing that the kid face while starting out in the beginning is a sense of separation and anxiety from their parents and loved ones. But once they get familiar and get adequate personal attention from the teacher, they develop an attachment with the school. Then attending school becomes fun for the kid. Though there are parents who like to keep their kids close to them thinking they themselves can teach them instead of leaving them in a preschool. This concept must be challenged in a modern setup of a school. On one hand, preschool enhances learning skills and have immense educational advantages, on the other, overall growth of the kid is triggered through various activities. Herein, the early childhood teachers play a pivotal role. He/ she are the guiding stars in the life of the kid. He/she is never impatient rather gives complete care and love to the children making it a second home like feeling for them.
Pre-primary teacher training will be your route to fulfil your desire to become a teacher.  Be the best in your own domain as teaching is not an easy task but can be truly rewarding.
