Be a Trained Montessori Teacher with Professional Training

The contemporary time in this world is completely surrounded by technology. Health, education, personal welfare everything is just a click away. Bringing up a child in this technologically advanced age can be quite challenging, they already know the World Wide Web. Thus, to nurture a child’s emotional and behavioural capabilities in a better way a form of early education is needed that helps a kid grow with intelligence and empathy rather than a mechanical being.

The Montessori form of education plays a pivotal role in a child’s early education. It has evolved since ages at par with the fast paced world but it still holds the principles of its founder. Sometimes we confuse Montessori teaching with traditional ways of teaching; however, both are entirely different. While traditional learning  focuses mainly on academics and follow a set curriculum and discipline Montessori  education focuses on the child’s acquisition of academic, social, practical and life skills. In traditional education system a child is a passive participant in learning, taught by a teacher, sitting at desks, copying from the board and they are limited to what they are given. Through Montessori education a child learns by linking their physical and cognitive senses, they learn at their own pace. The child can move around and work where he/she is comfortable, they are inspired to build internal self-discipline and emphasis is laid on the overall intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual development.
Montessori education offers our children opportunities to develop their potential as they step out into the world as a responsible citizen with understanding and compassion. This education system is beneficial to the children in many ways. Each child is valued as a unique individual and to accommodate individual interests the Montessori system has a wide variety. The teacher has to know how to guide each child with an individualized learning plan that compliments the child’s curiosity and skills. The classrooms become a close knit caring and sharing community. The teachers have to instil love and kindness in them, help them solve their problems and resolve conflicts peacefully.  Montessori students enjoy freedom within limits; Montessorians understand that internal satisfaction drives the child’s curiosity and interest and results in joyous learning that is sustainable over a lifetime. Teachers provide environments where students have the freedom and the tools to pursue answers to their own questions.
The teacher plays the most important role in moulding a child. As Montessori education provides unique learning opportunities a teacher must be well accustomed to the principles and methods of the system. The Montessori teacher should not only concentrate on teaching but also on the child’s learning. The teacher should create an environment for the child where learning looks attractive. The teacher should present their best self and cater to each individual need. Thus, training of the teachers is an important aspect. They should know perseverance and be prepared to handle unexpected responsibilities. A teacher should know the difference between rote learning and exploring one’s own ideas and capabilities. A teacher should bring about the best in the child and prepare him/her to think critically, work collaboratively towards building a better world.

Empower Your Learners by Lending an Ear to Your Pre and Primary Class

Pre and Primary classrooms are not just teacher to student interaction. Rather it’s both way and teacher plays a vital role of a listener and thus empowering the students in the learning process. Hence good listening skills are needed to develop empathy and understanding with the students, and also must have the ability to assess whether they understood what are being taught.  Listening skills also help in negotiating with students and defusing a suddenly erupt classroom conflicts.

Listening is a two-way process wherein the teachers not just only do the talking but also listen to the students. As the students spend a lot of time listening to the teacher, this enhances their listening skills. Both the teacher and student learn from each other. The practice should be such that students develop their own educational plan which involves searching and finding solutions to their everyday queries and problems generated. They must never consider the teachers as the fountain of all knowledge.
The teacher must have the ability to empathise with the student’s viewpoint. Even then personality clashes, differences, status gap between teacher and student etc may rise and thus obstacle the listening and communication between the teacher and the student.  To reduce tension in the classroom the teacher must introduce empathetic listening in the classroom. He/she must promote honest communication and build trust and confidence among themselves.
21st century teachers need to cultivate a range of skills apart from teaching methods to support the learning goals of all children.  Diploma in Pre and Primary teacher training designed meticulously to produce efficacious educators who would understand the need of the students.  These educators must exhibit following characteristics to display genuine desire to understand:-
  • Be attentive and not easily distracted.
  • Create positive atmosphere with non verbal behaviour like body language and facial expressions.
  • Act like a mirror, by reflecting what exactly you are feeling.
  • Show that you are never in a hurry and maintain silence throughout teaching, as this gives students opportunities to think and reflect on questions and topics in their mind before verbally giving an answer.
  • Never get emotionally involved, angry, argumentative and upset. Always maintain a professional attitude while you interact with students, as you are their role model and children look up to you for directions.
  • Never jump to conclusions and judgement about any student.
  • Avoid pre-conceived ideas about a student based on what you have heard from a colleague or former teacher.

Always show that you are listening. Lend you ear in their learning process. This can be done by encouraging acknowledgements like ‘Yes’ or ‘I see’ or simply by nodding. Even without any verbal communication you can show that you are listening like eye contact, facial expression or relaxed body postures. And always remember to invite more responses from the students and thus encouraging them to speak up with full enthusiasm. Use of words- ‘tell me more’ or’ I’d like to hear about that’- words works like magic. Never interrupt or change the subject as this is very discouraging.
Thus the pre and primary teacher training course prepares you to handle the most important aspect of communication. You stop to teach or preach or just give an advice, you learn to become silent speaker. Hence the teacher becomes their friend rather a better educator from whom they learn in a playful manner. As the educator never speaks down to them, they can sense the teacher is not above their level and they would stop responding. They find it rather easy to communicate with this teacher. This improved motivation helps in the fulfilment of the learning goals.
Join the course and learn the modern techniques of teaching and grow on your skills. Classroom management is not an easy task; you have to master the skill to deal with students of all levels and behavioural pattern. Listening skill is something you must work on while you pursue the course. Candidates enrolling from different backgrounds must keep one thing in mind. This learning and teaching process is not about the subject matter i.e., ‘not what you teach but how you teach’.

Provide a Nurturing Environment as a Montessori Teacher

Montessori teachers view children and classroom education differently than the common teacher-student relationship. Their focus shifted from academic education to encouraging each child’s individuality by providing nurturing environment to teach social interactions and emotional skills. In order to achieve this goal Montessori methods are often applied in class and thus bringing about overall development at early age of a child.

The Montessori Method was developed by Maria Montessori in the early 20th century, the educator and physician had altogether different outlook towards child growth and development.  The method focuses on each child’s internal guidance for self-directed development. Herein the teacher is like a monitor or guide keeping a watch at the classroom for smooth flow of learning and avoiding obstacles, without directly instructing or involving in the free ambience of the classroom. The lessons given by the teacher only revolves round helping the child with use or play with various instructional toys in the classroom.
Instead of instructing with lectures, handouts, worksheets and lesson plans, a Montessori teacher will offer guidance while the children themselves responsible for their own learning in individual or group. The classroom will contain several stations, each having different toy sets allowing the child to explore and learn. One station can have bucket of Lego blocks and several pictures of simple objects like an apple or a house which the children will build if they want. Other stations might have books, xylophone, pencils and crayons which will involve them in engaging activities. The idea behind this is that children will learn through playing.
Another interesting Montessori classroom is age grouping. Montessori classrooms often have mixed-age class, for example children ages ranging from three to six. This is important because children at different stages learn in their different pace. And younger children learn by watching older children play. This is also known as scaffolding, a method of social learning.
A Montessori classroom is completely different form typical classroom in a number of ways. This difference has to be considered by the teacher while providing a nurturing environment to develop children independently in a well-rounded manner. BY allowing them to play on their own and instead of letting them listen to lectures, classroom allows children develop the motivation to learn and explore.
If you are planning to be a Montessori teacher then training is absolutely is necessary to keep yourself updates with the Montessori approaches to needed to be applied in a classroom. There are different levels of Montessori Teachers Training- Certificate, Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma which will help you develop and prepare yourself in a Montessori environment.  Instead of information passing from teacher to student, herein the teacher is now skilled to put the children in an environment and help them to learn by making intelligent choices and carry out research in a prepared environment. The teacher constantly protects the student’s concentration from interruption. This fosters a love of learning in the students. There is in fact a triangle between- student, parent or teacher and the environment. It’s the role of the adult to prepare and continue preparing the environment to link the child to it through introductions of various learning inputs like- books and materials, projects and lessons. All this nurtures the child’s exploration and creative zeal. Hence, children often learn to surpass the level of education of their peers and knowledge of the adults around them and they learn to find answers by themselves.
The Montessori school environment is arranged according to subject area like cooking, cleaning, gardening, art and craft and caring for animals, library corner etc wherein the children move around the classroom instead of sitting at the desks. There is no limit posed on the child to their pace of learning. They can take longer time in learning things new to them. The mixed age groups of children learn from each other, facilitated by careful observation, individual lessons and keeping record by the teacher. All this help the teacher in developing a bonding with the students. This nurturing environment provides the base for complete growth and development of the children.

Montessori Method Encourages Teachers to be “Guide on the Side”

A Montessori teacher is a facilitator. The basic montessorian principal is that teachers should be a guide-on-the –side rather than a sage-on-the-stage. It is such that even a top-down learning environment is non-productive for the student. Education is effective rather successful when the student is an independent learner. In this regards, Montessori teachers must complete teacher training programs to be more credentialed teachers.

In this Montessori environment, there should be deep respect for the young learners. In such a classroom setting the students can freely flourish in a setting that is supportive and respectful of their individuality, abilities and potential.  Here the students are intrinsically motivated by letting them to work on their interest and goals and not for their external rewards.

The children’s learn at their own pace provided a classroom that is designed in a structure that facilitates students. In this environment, develops the skills to independent problem solving by allowing them to explore, discover, research and learn by themselves. During this phase, the teacher closely monitors the progress of each student, helping her make good choices that support learning and exploration of all subjects within an academic curriculum.

It’s an approximate 3 year cycle when the students remain with the same teachers and thus benefitting the teachers to have intimate knowledge of each individual student’s learning style and potential. It is an add-on to the consistency in a student’s academic life. The curriculum is also such that it is kept in a spiralling manner throughout the three year cycle which develops the greater understanding of the academic subjects.

Similarly, the students are engaged in tasks that relate directly to everyday practical skills. Like, caring for oneself and the environment, organizing and using household materials, are employed in the classroom to help students build critical-thinking, decision-making skills and fine motor coordination skills.

Another important aspect of Montessori education is thoughtful engagement with others in a respectful manner. These are the building blocks for the peace curriculum that is ever present in a Montessori school. Compassion is characteristics that are held high in the Montessori curriculum.

Learning is thus not simply to complete an assignment or achieve a test score successfully. Curiosity and life-long intellectual pursuit of knowledge is a means for life. Montessori students learn to take risks in their academic work and think creatively without a feat of failure, thanks to the teachers, their mentors. Montessori teacher trainingcourses are prepares the teacher in coordination of a classroom full of children with diverse attention span. Each child’s lifetime learning process begins at school holding hands with the teacher. Surprisingly, the Montessori teacher training has been beneficial for the teachers in a substantial manner. It has proven to work in favour of the school environment and child growth and development.

Educational Managers are in Great Demand

There has been much demand for education managers in the recent times with the rise and development of the education system. The infrastructure and other organizational goals need to be met through strategic and conceptual thinking. There are four major functions they need to perform that would lead to organizational success- planning, organizing, leading and controlling.

Planning: - In this step the education manger will have to create a detailed action plan aimed at achieving some organizational goals. Planning is an ongoing stage and is highly specialized depending on the specific organizational goals, division and departmental goals and also team goals. Now it’s up to the manager to recognize which goal need to be addressed and then plan accordingly.
Organizing: - The second of the managerial functions is organizing. This requires the education manager to determine how he or she will distribute resources and organize her employees according to the plan. While identifying the role the manager must make sure that he or she assigns right amount of employees to carry out the plan that has been chalked before. This will involve delegation of authority, assigning work and their provide direction or monitor their work towards fulfilment of the organizational goals.
Leading: - This is the third function where the leader or manager needs to connect to the employees on interpersonal level. This is beyond simple managing tasks rather involving communicating, motivating, inspiring and encouraging employees towards high level of productivity. This is the skill of the manager to lead and guide the employee and smooth completion of the job. Such will be his or her nature or charisma that employees will voluntarily follow the directions of the leader.
Controlling: - This is indeed the final function of the management. Once a plan is carried out, the manager evaluates the results against he set goals. If that goal is not the met in the process, the education manager will take necessary corrective steps.
All these are not techniques rather the skill of the educational leader to manage and meet developmental goals of an educational institute. As because the running of an educational organization like a school or college requires certain level of capacity and expertise, this has raised the standards and requirement of education managers. Programs on Educational Administration and Management at different levels help to bring out the leadership qualities in running the administration of an organisation.

The success of an organisation greatly depends on the leadership quality of the managers. The courses strengthen their skills and help them overcome their shortcomings in handling various situations in an educational set up. Often the above mentioned functions don’t work in a situation of crisis. The manager now acts upon his or her own skills to handle such a situation. It is the prime goal of the education manager to deal with all situations arising within the organisation. He or she must have the patience, control and dynamic personality that every order of his or her would be followed with obedience. Give a chance to yourself and learn the tricks to handle an educational organisation efficiently.
